The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Project aims to engage with and support individuals in Gloucestershire who are currently dealing with circumstances that are potentially causing barriers to work and move these people closer towards education, training, volunteering or work, including self-employment. This project is particularly seeking to support women returning to work, people with addictions, people from rural areas, those with disabilities (including learning disabilities and mental health issues), Black and Ethnic Minorities, carers, homeless,  16 to 25 year olds and over 50’s.

This programme is a unique partnership of community based organisations, managed by Gloucestershire Gateway Trust on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council.

The Navigator Developer  is tasked with engaging with potential participants on a one to one basis and helping them progress. Support is given to identify the barriers preventing the participant moving into work and then helping to identify ways of removing these barriers. This service is available to the residents at Open House but in addition may also be accessed by anyone living in the Stroud district.

Anyone wishing to access support must be able to prove that they have the right to live and work in the UK and that they are either: a) not working and unemployed, or b) not working and economically inactive.

The GEM Project is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund. For more information about the GEM project please visit
